The Journey
From studying with master musicians in Cameroon to composing and producing over 90 songs for the Oprah Winfrey Show, Earl Talbot has spent a lifetime proving that rhythm is the universal language. Multi-platinum recording artist. International performer. Dedicated educator.
Earl Talbot started piano at age four and began playing drums at ten. Growing up in Lakeview, Chicago, he was performing in bands and clubs alongside mentor Charlie Caston (RIP), and had a Polygram recording contract just after graduating high school.
At the age of 21, Earl entered Lawrence University's Conservatory of Music, shifting his focus to Jazz, theory, and comprehension of more complex polyrhythms. That path led him to France, where he met Christian Bourdon — Master drummer from Cameroon, who would change everything.
Earl studied for several years under Bourdon, traveling to Cameroon, and performing with hosts of master musicians from West Africa. Throughout Yaoundé he was promoted as 'Eswabid (a plate of food), the American who plays Bikutsi!". That immersive, transformative experience, became the foundation for everything that followed.
"A pivotal time in my life that forever enhanced my life, and my skills as a producer, teacher, and performer."
Heritage
Earl, and his son Earl Jaiden Talbot, are 3rd and 4th great grandchildren of Augustine Austin Smith, first president of North Central College (1861). His great (2X) grandfather H. C. Smith was professor of Music and Latin Languages for 60 years and remains the longest serving professor in the college's history.
Career
Achieved Diamond Record status as writer and vocalist of Nomads. Their hit "Yakalelo" dominated across Central Europe and North Africa, launching an international music career.
Wrote and produced over 90 original songs broadcast regularly on one of the most-watched television programs in history. Brought his rhythmic vocabulary and global influences to a mainstream audience of millions.
Touring drummer for the beloved Chicago band. From festival stages to studio sessions, Earl brought his signature groove and world-music sensibility to one of the city's most eclectic acts.
Produced songs for Katt Williams' American Hustle. Worked with Maya Angelou, Patrick Stump, The Hush Sound, Cyndi Lauper, Chicago Sinfonietta, and house legends Derick Carter and Mark Farina.
Teaching
Earl founded The Drum School to share the rhythmic traditions he learned across three continents. Whether a student is picking up sticks for the first time or preparing for performance, Earl brings the same depth, patience, and global perspective to every lesson.
"My greatest reward is enjoying the success of my students."
— Earl TalbotOver the years in Naperville, Earl has directed the jazz band at Naperville Central High School, lead group classes at the Alive Center, and started a percussion class for Glenwood School in St. Charles. He taught private lessons for percussion and music production while delivering on deadlines for his clients in the industry, and most importantly, being a husband and father.

An upcoming series of drum master classes bringing world rhythm techniques to students, schools, and communities across the Midwest and beyond.
Testimonials
Earl Talbot has been a drum set artist/clinician at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music where his master class and individual lessons were truly an inspiration for my students.
His knowledge and grasp of performance techniques of popular West African drum set styles are rare to come by in the U.S.
He opened up a whole new world of groove possibilities for my students and me, while demonstrating ways to practice in how to achieve learning these DEEP POCKET RHYTHMS. Thank you, Earl!
Earl displays genuine faith, compassion, and dedication towards his students and their abilities to create music. Through my own learning experience, his teaching has helped me mature as a drummer as well as a music lover.
Earl’s guidance has opened up my mind and body for an honest understanding and appreciation of rhythm and feel, something that will live with me forever. Sharing his knowledge and wisdom has allowed myself to open up clearer communication channels on a musical level with the bands I record, which has ultimately helped me become a better producer.
I’m lucky to have Earl in my life and happy that he has become one of my closest friends.
Earl Talbot is a wonderfully patient, enthusiastic, and supportive percussion teacher who is sincerely interested in his students’ lives beyond drumming. He is an accomplished and award-winning percussionist who has traveled the globe to develop his skill and knowledge; yet Earl still has the humility and larger-than-life personality to relate beautifully with our middle school son.
During the lessons, Earl is fully engaged and appears to be having at least as much fun as our son is. With real-world success in marketing many of his original pieces, Earl guides our son in creating, recording, and evaluating his own music utilizing technology — a must for any student who considers incorporating music into some aspect of his career.
We are very grateful to have this amazing role model in our young son’s life.
